Gathered to Your People
There comes a moment when the eyes close upon this world, and the soul begins to see another.
As the soul leaves the body, those it had known in this world gather to receive it. They have already passed this way.
Together they accompany it towards the place prepared for its arrival.
It is a hidden realm into which the Zohar gives us a glimpse.
At the close of Parashat Haazinu, Moshe stands at the threshold of that journey. Hashem tells him to ascend Har Nevo, to look upon the Land he will never enter, and there to die.
But the Torah says something more:
וּמֻת בָּהָר אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה עֹלֶה שָׁמָּה וְהֵאָסֵף אֶל־עַמֶּיךָ
And die on the mountain which you are ascending, and be gathered to your people.
(Devarim 32:50)
Who are the people to whom Moshe will be gathered?
The words cannot simply describe burial. Moshe will not be buried alongside his ancestors; the Torah will later tell us that no one knows his burial place.
To those left behind, death appears as a separation.
Yet the Torah chooses the language of gathering.
The Zohar’s description of the soul’s departure gives those words another dimension. Gathered to your people speaks not of where the body will rest, but of belonging beyond this world.
From this world, Moshe’s final journey appears to be his alone.
Beyond the mountain, others are waiting.
Moshe had spent his life leading his people home.
Now he too would be accompanied home.
