Great read!
There’s a new book out that may be of interest…
Perilous Privilege,” by Skip Carter, contains all the elements of an exciting, enticing novel intertwined with accurate historical accounts of third century Rome. One could not find a more engaging book about this dangerous era of the Roman Empire when political assassination and intrigue abounded, amidst ongoing military campaigns, triangular love affairs, great rivalries, and the ever present victories and violence of warfare.
The beauty of this historical novel is that it transports the reader to a time and place where one becomes a silent observer- smelling the smoke and earth of the battlefield, hearing the clanging and smashing of horse and armour, visualizing the banqueting, the personal seductions, enticements and scheming of the variety of characters, even the sporadic appearance of a mystical Druid prophetess, while feeling the anxiety posed by the dangers of ever present plots and schemes, the thrill of the gladiators, the joys and sorrows of every day life.
To read Perilous Privilege is to enter the chaos of a time when 14 Roman emperors suffered violent deaths in the space of 42 years, almost entirely at the hands of fellow Romans.
Very absorbing. Great read.
