Israel delivers Arrow 3 to Germany: ‘We are proud to be able to protect Germany’

The recent delivery of the Arrow 3 missile defense system to Germany represents far more than a just transaction between two friendly nations. It is a defining moment in contemporary geopolitics, signaling a structural shift in the security architecture of the West.

When the first operational Arrow 3 battery was handed over to the German Air Force at Holzdorf Air Base this week, it marked an important milestone of Israel’s largest-ever defense export deal, valued at approximately €4 billion.

But beyond the economics, this event underscores a profound transformation: the State of Israel has evolved into a primary guarantor of security for the Western world. By integrating Israeli technology as the upper layer of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), Germany and, by extension, NATO are acknowledging that Israel possesses unique, battle-tested capabilities that European industry cannot currently match. This creates a formidable deterrent. German skies are now guarded by the same system that successfully thwarted massive Iranian ballistic missile attacks over the last years.

What makes this partnership also unique is the heavy weight of history that precedes it. During the handover ceremony, Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram articulated this mature, forward-looking strategic posture. He stated:

We Israelis, descendants of Holocaust survivors, want to see Germany strong and prosperous, proud and leading in Europe and throughout the world. We deeply appreciate that Israeli systems are part of Germany’s renewed force build-up.

Israel views a rearmed and robust Germany as an essential partner in the global order. It is a validation of a Zionist ethos: that sovereignty and strength allow a people to move from victimhood to being an active player in shaping history.

From a realist perspective, this deal also serves as a reminder of Israel’s role as the forward operating base of Western democracy. Israel does not merely develop weapons for export; it develops them out of existential necessity. The Arrow 3 was forged in the fire of constant threats from Tehran and its proxies. Baram touched upon this critical aspect of Israel’s utility to the West, noting that the country’s battles are not fought in isolation. He emphasized:

When Israel acts against nuclear threats, ballistic missiles, and terrorism, we are not only defending ourselves, we are protecting the entire Western world. We are doing the hard work, sometimes the ‘dirty work,’ that the entire world should be doing.

Baram clearly refers to a previous statement of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz in June 2025, when the German Chancellor admitted that Israel is doing “the dirty work for all of us.”

While we analyze this through the lens of Realpolitik, the historical resonance cannot be ignored. The timeline of history has bent in a remarkable way: Israel, as the state and nation explicitly founded to protect the Jewish people, is now providing the shield to protect the nation that once sought that annihilation. Israel’s Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, captured this geopolitical and historical convergence. In his statement regarding the handover, he observed the profound nature of this reversal:

Who could have imagined that only 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the Jewish state, through the technologies it develops, would help defend not only Germany but all of Europe. My family, who fled Germany on the eve of the Holocaust, could never have foreseen this.

It is also worth noting the industrial and managerial achievement this represents. Boaz Levy, CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), pointed out the significance of delivering this system on time, even as Israel fights a multi-front war. This demonstrates to the world that the Israeli defense sector is resilient and reliable, regardless of the operational tempo at home.

In the complex calculus of international relations, nations obviously have permanent interests. However, when interests align so perfectly – Germany’s need for defense and Israel’s capacity to provide it – the resulting partnership can become a cornerstone of international stability. The Jewish state has proven countless times that it is an essential, irreplaceable asset to the free world. The Arrow 3 deal is therefore not just good business. It is sound strategy, moral justice, and a victory for the collective defense of democracy.
