Israel is not alone

There have been many statements that Israel now stands alone. This is a separate, but connected, topic from whether Jews stand alone. I am just considering the case of Israel here.

At the UN and elsewhere, many nations are condemning Israel for the “genocide” in Gaza as well as continuing violence in the West Bank. Numerically, the world’s nations are against Israel. However, standing alone means no one is standing with you. I want to list some powerful constituencies and institutions that are standing with Israel in a rough order of importance and degree of support

1. America
2. World Jewry
3. American evangelicals and other Christian groups worldwide
4. Some Western nations

Let’s examine these one by one:

1. America

America gave Israel $3.2 billion in 2022 of which over 99% was in military aid.  The countries that America gave more than $1 billion in 2021 were Jordan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Yemen (in descending order by amount).  All these countries are far poorer than Israel on a per capita basis.  America’s support for Israel during the Gaza war has been very strong with no repercussions on military aid despite about 18,000 deaths in Gaza.

2. World Jewry

World Jewry is very solidly behind Israel, despite some Jewish far-Left groups criticizing Israel’s Gaza campaign.  This support, mainly financial and political, but also in volunteering in Israel and the US, peaks in times of crisis.

3. American evangelicals and other Christian groups worldwide

In America, Christian evangelicals provide strong domestic political support for Israel.  They also provide direct monetary support as well as extensive tourism to visit their Holy Places in Israel

4. Some Western nations

Nearly all Western democracies were unequivocal in their condemnation of Hamas atrocities on October 7th.  They stated that Israel has a right to self-defense.  In the UN General Assembly on the ceasefire resolution the UK, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and, the Netherlands, abstained.

I am not stating that Israel does not have numerous enemies, some are very powerful.  I am not denying threats to Jews living in the diaspora.   My point in this article is that Israel does not stand alone.  It does not.
