BRUSSELS – Claims that Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar applied “serious diplomatic pressure” in Washington to stop the attacks on Rojava were confirmed first-hand in Brussels. Speaking at a Kurdish-focused panel held in Brussels, Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Rojava Autonomous Administration, confirmed Israel’s active role in this process in response to my question.

A Question Asked on the Ground Cleared the Uncertainty

At the panel held in the Anderlecht district of Brussels, where the current situation in Rojava was discussed, I took the floor and asked Ilham Ahmed about the claims regarding “Israel’s role in preventing the attacks,” which had been raised by Yehuda Ben Yosef, President of the Kurdish community in Israel.

Following the attacks launched in November 2025 by Turkey and jihadist groups affiliated with the Interim Damascus Government against Kurdish regions, Kurds in Syria once again faced the threat of massacre. Videos circulated on Telegram channels showing humiliating torture inflicted on Kurdish women (cutting their hair after killing them) and the burning of Kurdish civilians’ bodies. The large-scale massacre ambition of the New Syrian Army, composed of former ISIS and Al-Qaeda elements, was prevented by Israel.

The claim in question had come to the agenda following a critical meeting held on February 12 between Yehuda Ben Yosef, President of the Kurdish Community in Israel, and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. In a statement after the meeting, Ben Yosef stated that Israel had played a preventive role in stopping a Kurdish massacre. According to Ben Yosef, Sa’ar used the following expressions during the meeting:

One of the main factors in stopping the massacres and clashes in Rojava was the intense pressure applied by the Israeli government in its talks with the U.S. administration. Israel did not stand silently by while the Kurds were under threat, and these diplomatic efforts ensured that the massacre was halted.

The “Natural Ally” Discourse Reflected on the Ground

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, in his first speech immediately after taking office on November 11, 2024, described the Kurdish people as “one of the largest nations without political independence” and stated that the Kurds are a “natural ally” for Israel.
