US ‘President’ Donald J. Trump was onto something when, early on, he called the media the enemy of the State. State being the code for himself.
And that is why news shows like Fox News and comparable ilk are so destructive. They enable the rule of lie instead of the rule of law.
Blood libels and conspiracy theories lose all footing when enough journalists are empowered.
I’m not denying the problem of media bias. But there is more than a fine line between being biased and setting out to manipulate the viewer.
Yes, politicians are often accomplished pretenders and many networks are tainted by it too. Still, when you cripple the press, you bury freedom.
A half-dishonest press is still much better than wall-to-wall manipulation of the public enabled or fortified by incompetent, indifferent, permissive, bigoted, bought-up, or corrupt journalists.
IMHO, what the Biden administration should do is four things:
1. Create law that states clearly that Freedom of Speech does not give license or shelter permission to hurt, misinform, or lie.
2. Freedom of the press and political research are as dear and valuable and worthy of protection as equality in voting rights is for democracy.
3. Stand up and satire have proven themselves very valuable means to inform and engage the public against lies and injustice. Their jobs should be awarded the same status and protection and the job of newscasters.
4. Many words and actions by the former president are so outrageous that there was no law to forbid them. There must come laws that make it illegal to spread hatred, prejudices, lies, baseless theories, especially by elected officials and have them literally pay for any damage done by people who believed them. Just like the military will not execute an illegal command, a hurt-provoking speech will have the instigator pay up.
