Dear Judge Barrett,
I trust you watched the presidential debate last night. If not, you must. Either way, I beseech you once more to reconsider whether you wish to attach your reputation forever to the man whose unspeakably shameful performance the American nation and the world witnessed in horror (though hardly with any surprise).
No political or judicial position could conceivably justify debasing yourself and your respectable record by accepting his nomination to the Supreme Court — let alone by assisting him immediately afterward to steal the election by means of the Court, as he has openly declared that he intends.
The future of the American Republic — and global democracy that depends on it — hangs in the balance. You know better than most that it cannot survive another four years of Trumpism. History will not forgive those who enable him — no matter how high-minded (but oblivious) their motivation may be.
Most respectfully yours,
(E-mailed to Judge Amy Coney Barrett at Notre Dame University, where she is a professor of law)
