Maccabiah 2026: Shalom Brasil Brings Pride and History
Maccabiah 2026: Ceremonial Moment
Jerusalem witnessed a historic night at the opening of Maccabiah 2026, held at the Teddy Stadium. The event gathered thousands of athletes from more than 50 countries and 50 Jewish communities, turning the stadium into a vibrant mosaic of flags, colors, and emotions — as described by Lilian Hollender.
“Sports united us, and our history brought us back home,” highlighted Lilian Hollender.
Opening Ceremony
With packed stands, the audience enjoyed a dazzling show of music, lights, and choreography. The presence of President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underscored the importance of the connection between Israel and the Jewish diaspora. Both emphasized that the Maccabiah Games are more than a competition — they are a living bond between tradition, identity, and the future.
Brazilian Delegation
Brazil made a strong impression with around 400 athletes, the second-largest delegation in the world.
• Flag bearer: Sami Sztokfis
• Delegation head: Avi Gelber
• CBM President: David Bobrow
The Brazilian entrance was described as a moment of history, pride, and community, earning enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Post–October 7 Significance
Following the events of October 7, the presence of the delegations took on a deeper meaning. For many, being in Israel at this moment is a statement of unity, solidarity, and resilience.
“It’s proof that we are alive, that we are here in Israel,” said Avi Gelber.
