My grandfather had the codename of General Storm when he was trying to lead Lithuania’s partisans in the fight against the Communists in 1946, just before he was betrayed and brought to the KGB prison, where he died a martyr for Lithuania’s freedom.
Lithuania, or Lietuva, means Land of Rain.
What kind of book is it?
Storm in the Land of Rain is a memoir, a first-hand account, which began as an act of family pride and ended with uncovering the secret a Chicago household, and an entire nation, had kept hidden for more than 80 years. A literary narrative of the Holocaust in Lithuania through the lens of one perpetrator’s family, as well as a journalistic investigation, which includes interviews of nearly 100 witnesses and references to 1,000 documents. A gripping, intimate story of Holocaust distortion from Chicago to Lithuania.
- How should our family’s past, shameful or noble, shape our identity?
- How could one man be revered as a hero, having a grammar school named after him, and yet be a villain responsible for the deaths of thousands?
- Why are some European countries still in denial about their role in the Holocaust?

Travels to Israel
I recently returned from a trip to Israel at the invitation of the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel. It was truly exciting to give a presentation at the ZOA Theater House in Tel Aviv. Here is a video by Les Glassman of the event.
I also had the opportunity to meet with Lithuania’s Ambassador to Israel, and found the discussion to be very hopeful. As a result of this conversation, I now believe that Lithuania is closer to admitting its role in the Holocaust.
Travels to Lithuania
Last February, I appeared at the Vilnius Book Fair for the book launch in Lithuanian called Vėtra Lietaus Šalyje by the publisher Kitos Knygos. I am thrilled beyond belief that the book has been published in Lithuania. Here is an interview in Lithuanian that appeared in Delfi.
I will be returning to Lithuania for the third time this year at the end of June to present for The Olga Lengyal Institute in Vilnius.
