What do Left-wing and Orthodox-Jewish have in common?
In excellent reporting, we learn that 600 conference participants in Jerusalem went to fill a gaping void. (One day, I might forgive the press for not reporting this before the event and mostly ignoring it afterward too.)
In honor of the partakers, I want to point out some of the overlap between Left-wing and Orthodox-Jewish.
The Rabbis explain we’re told the story of Adam and Eve so no one may claim any longer that some are from more important lineage than others.
This is also the basis of Democracy and anti-discrimination.
G^d did not create automatons or slaves without a will to do His Will. Rather, He didn’t force Destiny upon us and gave us Free Will.
Judaism advocates attracting others by modeling for them what is a good life and not forcing others to do (our perception of) good and holy.
This is the basis of Democratic freedom rights and our ability to peddle our philosophies in the marketplace for ideas. May the best win!
The Torah is full of Commandments to protect the weak.
This is the basis of Democracy’s preferential treatment and protection of the socially weak and vulnerable minorities.
The Talmuds are one long proof that debates are important and differences of opinion are generally fine.
This is the basis of politics and parliamentarian Democracy.
We must expose false claims that there is a democratic right and duty to discriminate as just the anti-democratic Bigotry it is.
We should reveal the faulting of Jews for advocating different roles for Jew and Gentile, Woman and Man, as just anti-democratic Antisemitism.
We shall call out the ‘religious’ hypocrisy of religious Jews calling their capitalist monetary policies ‘Jewish,’ while they don’t protect the weak or cancel the interest loophole that impoverishes most ordinary Israelis.
I once heard a US Right-wing Upper-Middle-Class Jew say to his friend: I’m a Capitalist, but as a religious Jew, there is only so much callousness that I can support.
