Just when we were getting used to there being two major sexual preferences (one toward males and one toward females), we’re confronted with the idea that there are numerous genders. A quiet brain seems a thing of the past.
Luckily, a new book about gender issues comes from an author with a sense of humor who also can put things into perspective. It’s easier to learn when you’re allowed to laugh (and goof). It was interesting to see (click the link) how his attempt at gender shocking immediately flunked because of unaware white racism. No one is perfect, I guess.
Traditional Judaism seems especially interested in every Jew contributing to raising the next generation and women having a good sexual relationship and man having one sexual relationship, for personal growth and happiness of the kids. But it is especially interested in what is visible. People’s biological sex is visible but gender identity not.
However, visibility is not all that concerns it. Judaism distinguishes a good animal from a known aggressive animal. So, gender will be taken into account by Rabbis that learn that gender identity, just like sexual preference, does not fluctuate and is not chosen. They can be suppressed and discovered but that’s it.
But “experimenting” with sexual preference or gender identity explicitly will not be on the menu of Jewish Law. You need to find your role in the universe, in life, not adopt what’s others’.

Talking of which, the flagship yeshiva of Open Orthodoxy has now refused to give the rabbi’s diploma to one of its qualified students “because” he’s gay and engage to be married to a guy. This is the most progressive wing of Orthodoxy. How can these rabbis live with themselves? Well, it’s simple — like every immoral person. They close their eyes to reality and morality and repeat the bigotry of their youth and feel very pleased with themselves even if they know nothing about gays.
Almost all gays are way too polite. I don’t plead for more underdressed pride marches. I plead for angry gays. Feminists did not accomplish anything by just being “nice.” Scream at the oppressors. Show how angry you are. And then cry in public and talk about how humiliating this is. Stop being so nice. It isn’t working! People who prefer their comfort above being halfway decent don’t deserve being spoken to politely.
Ah, you need words to get started? I have a few for you. “How dare you delegitimize people. As a Jew. As a rabbi. After Auschwitz. How dare you!”
But especially compared to the openmindedness of many non-rabbinic progressive Israelis and traditional Israeli Jews all over the country and non-Jewish US Gentiles, the attitude of almost all Orthodox rabbis is a great scandal for which they will need to apologize for decades to come.
