Silent Echoes: The Selective Outrage of the World and the Quest for True Justice
I find myself at a crossroads of realities, where the land I love, Israel, and the principles I stand for, pacifism and justice are constantly tested. As a Jew and an Israeli, I have experienced the painful contrast between the struggle for my people’s survival and the distorted perception the world often has of this battle. The fight against Hamas, for example, is painted in dark strokes by the international media; every action of ours is magnified into a spectrum of criticism, branded as a crime against humanity. This one-sided view perplexes me, especially considering the deafening silence regarding other conflicts and injustices worldwide.
Reflecting on recent events, I recall the year 2023, a period that witnessed the execution of about 700 Iranians by the regime of the ayatollahs, labeled as enemies for daring to oppose. And at the start of 2024, we are confronted with the news of 86 executions. These lives, erased under the pretext of dissent, seem not to provoke the same international outrage that the actions of Israel frequently incite. I hear no uproar in the international courts, nor do I read notes of condemnation from England from Europe. Social movements, so vocal in other causes, seem to silence in the face of this horror.
This reaction discrepancy makes me question the integrity of global concern for humanity. I am perplexed by how easily the world chooses its villains and victims based on convenient narratives, often ignoring the complexity and humanity of conflicts. As a pacifist, my heart bleeds not only for my land and my people but for all those who suffer injustices whose stories are neglected or distorted.
The silence on the atrocities in Iran is revealing. It shows how international attention and action can be selective and how political agendas can fragment solidarity. This silence is not just a failure to recognize suffering; it is a failure to act under universal principles of justice and humanity. For me, this is a call to reflect deeply on our values, the responsibility to look beyond simplified narratives and recognize the complexity of struggles for justice worldwide. As someone dedicated to peace, I seek to understand and question, in the hope of finding pathways that lead us to a deeper understanding and more coherent actions for humanity.
