That Was the Week That Was!
What an eventful week!
The United States bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities has led to the feeling of relief among many Israelis that the Damocles sword that has been hanging over their heads for decades has been removed. As people who know much more (and maybe less) than many of us debate the extent of the damage, what is clear is that the hundreds of billions of dollars spent by the Iranian regime to develop the means of destroying Israel has gone down the tubes, and that it was possible to achieve this due to Israeli intelligence and the amazing work of the Israeli air force taking out the Iranian early detection warning system. Furthermore, the proxies they propped up, including the billions spent on Hezbollah in Lebanon, Syria, Hamas and elsewhere is proving to be a poor investment as well.
Not meaning to excuse or justify any of President’s Trump’s actions or policies with which we may disagree or take issue, but… dare I say it? It appears that Trump was the right person in the right place at the right time.
While there is relief that the loss of life in Israel was minimal, the extent of the physical damage of Iran’s missile attacks on civilian areas and the hospital in the Negev portends what could have been a terrible disaster – even without the use of nuclear weapons. It wasn’t just the nuclear program that was so ominous and disconcerting, but the threat posed by Iran’s rockets and ballistic missiles – as well as the seeding and funding of terrorist cells and proxies around the world whose primary purpose was to execute the Mullah’s goals of destroying Israel, and killing Jews and Israelis. In other words, Nazism 2.0.
I can’t help but note the minimal coverage of the deliberate bombing of a hospital in Israel – one which does not serve as a headquarters for terrorist operations, house weapons, commanders or cover up a tunnel with the way the press covered Israel’s actions against hospitals which were legitimate military targets.
There is a glimmer of hope that perhaps the new reality of Iran being shown to be a paper tiger could lead to a breakthrough in the talks to release the hostages still held by Hamas and to end the fighting in Gaza and hopefully to furthering the Abraham Accords. Yet while there is a feeling of relief that the damage was not greater, there is great sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in Gaza and from the shellings this week that took the lives of civilians.
On top of all of this, we are still processing the meaning of the NYC election in which an unapologetic anti-Zionist who co-founded a chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine and has a proven record of antipathy towards the Jewish state won the nomination of the Democratic Party for mayor of New York. It almost feels like we should be sitting shiva – but hopefully, New Yorkers will wake up to their senses and realize the danger of electing a socialist as mayor of the financial capital of the world.
As I have always said – These developments prove life is a moving picture, not a still photo. Let’s see what next week brings, and hope it will bring peace, blessing, and who knows – this could even be a good time the Messiah might surprise us and make an appearance as well.
