The past can rear its ugly head at any time, either suddenly or in a consistent way that hinders a person from moving forward. When someone’s pain stems from being abused by the people who were supposed to protect him the most, it can be that much more difficult to reconcile. But with intense support, there is hope in living to fight another day and create a better reality.
Rafi*, a 26 year old father of two, was struggling immensely with debilitating behaviors stemming from the deep trauma of having been physically and sexually abused by his parents as a child.
Rafi realized early on that if he had any chance of building a healthy marriage and becoming a good father, he needed outside assistance in working through what he had endured. When he called Amudim, Rafi had been seeing a therapist for several years; yet he found himself disengaging from his daily responsibilities and dissociating from his role as father and husband, resulting in continuous internal pain and conflict.
Our case manager spoke with Rafi for a long time, recognizing his client’s anxiety but also noting that Rafi seemed comforted by the genuine compassion and empathy offered in their discussion. After taking a full case history, it was clear that Rafi required more clinical intervention as well as assistance with paying for treatment.
We connected Rafi with a trauma trained therapist, and he immediately began twice weekly sessions. Thanks to the amazing generosity of our community of donors who believe in the power of addressing the past to create a healthy future, we were able to secure funding for Rafi’s treatment through Project Heal, the subdivision of Amudim dedicated to helping victims of sexual abuse.
Rafi has been seeing a new therapist for several months, and he and his case manager maintain weekly check ins to supplement his care and ensure that he is progressing and healing; Rafi is in a far better place than when he first mustered the courage to call, and is working steadily towards reconnecting with his wife, children, and finding peace within himself.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
