The Moral Failure of German Media on Israel

Something is deeply broken. What was once a solemn remembrance now feels like selective memory, and perhaps even betrayal. Germany built its postwar identity on remembrance, on solemnity, on a national vow to never forget what was done to Europe’s Jews, and to never allow it to happen again. And yet, somewhere between the Stolpersteine and the news desk, you’ve strayed from the moral clarity that remembrance demands.

When Jews face violence in the streets, some headlines demand ‘context’ before outrage. When Israel buries its dead, you ask for proportionality. When Jews fight to survive, you reach, almost compulsively, for Holocaust analogies.

Gaza is not Warsaw. Hamas is not a resistance. And Israel is not the Third Reich. If you cannot tell the difference, the responsibility is not Israel’s. It lies with you.

You do not get to chant Never Again every January while accusing the descendants of Holocaust survivors of becoming Nazis. You do not get to mourn the Shoah in the morning and echo Hamas talking points in the evening. You do not get to abuse history because it makes your narrative more palatable.

That’s not journalism. At best, it’s biased storytelling that abandons context when it’s most needed. Let’s stop pretending this is about objectivity. There is a disproportionate focus on Israel in parts of Germany’s media, scrutiny that often seems more like projection than journalism. It’s not about holding a government accountable. It’s about projecting the guilt of your past onto those you feel safest judging, because judging Jews for their survival is easier than facing your own historical discomfort.

It’s easier to accuse than to remember. Easier to posture than to reckon. And in that equation, Israeli lives become expendable.

You celebrate Israel when it’s poetic, conflicted, and apologetic, when it’s lighting candles, not launching airstrikes, when it stays quiet. But a strong Israel? A loud, armed, unapologetic Israel? That unsettles you. It unsettles a media class that prefers Jews as symbols, not citizens. As victims, not fighters. As memorials, not people. But here’s the reality: Israel is no longer a question mark in Jewish history. It is the answer. And it does not exist to perform your narrative.

I’ve seen the memorials. I’ve read the textbooks. I’ve heard the speeches. But remembrance without integrity is just ritual. And journalism without truth is just propaganda. Not every German journalist engages in this distortion. There are many who report with integrity. But the broader pattern, especially in publicly funded outlets, demands urgent scrutiny.

You are free to criticize Israel. But you are not free to erase terror. You are free to ask hard questions. But you are not free to twist Holocaust language to justify your discomfort. You are free to report. However, if you do so without context, honesty, and conscience, you’re not informing the public. You’re misleading it. You claim to protect democracy. Start by protecting the truth. You claim to honor the past. Start by not using it against those it was meant to protect.

And if you must speak of Never Again, say it with humility. Say it with care. And for once, say it while looking in the mirror.
