In one of the most openly pro-Israel speeches heard in the European Parliament in recent years, Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko delivered a powerful message of solidarity — not just with Israel as a state, but with the democratic values that bind it to the free world.

“Israel defends democracy, human rights, and the values we all share,” he said in his address. “Instead of attacking Israel, we need to  support Israel — and if we can’t do nothing, please let us not attack Israel. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East — a country that truly protects women’s rights, freedom, and the rule of law. While we’re arguing, Israel is acting. It is defending not only itself  — but all of us.”

In an exclusive follow-up conversation with the Times of Israel, Goncharenko reflected on the response to his remarks:

“After my speech, I received many messages of support from my European and Ukrainian colleagues. People also write to me on social media with words of encouragement.”

For Goncharenko, Israel’s fight resonates deeply — not just ideologically, but personally:

“After the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, Israel is defending its independence and right to exist. As a Ukrainian, I understand this very well. I can assess Israel’s fight only in the most positive terms.”

When asked whether he sees a broader connection between Ukraine’s war and Israel’s struggle, Goncharenko doesn’t hesitate:

“Definitely. We are fighting together against the global axis of evil: Iran, Russia, and their proxies — Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other terrorist groups. They are fueling conflicts around the world. They are uniting — and we must do the same to survive.”
