The Twilight of the Kadyrov Era: Chechnya’s Leader is on the Brink of Death

The long-standing stability of the Chechen Republic is facing its most significant challenge in decades. Speculation regarding the health of Ramzan Kadyrov, the region’s strongman and a pivotal ally to Vladimir Putin, has reached a fever pitch.
According to Ukrinform, citing a source from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense Main Intelligence Directorate, Kadyrov is currently in his own hospital in Chechnya in a critical condition.
Members of Kadyrov’s family clan, including relatives from abroad, have reportedly gathered around him.
Reports of chronic illness- specifically advanced kidney failure and pancreatic necrosis – have shifted the conversation in Moscow from “if” a succession will happen to “when” and “how.”
As Russia’s war in Ukraine enters another critical year, the potential power vacuum in Grozny threatens to destabilize one of the Kremlin’s most essential domestic strongholds.
A Leader in Decline
While official channels in Grozny recently continue to release heavily edited footage of Kadyrov exercising or chairing meetings, independent observers and intelligence sources paint a darker picture.
Kadyrov’s absence from several key federal events in late 2025 and early 2026 has fueled rumors of frequent hospitalizations at Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital.
More telling than the medical rumors are the political shifts. Reports suggest a cooling of relations between Kadyrov and President Putin, allegedly triggered by Kadyrov’s back-channel negotiations with Middle Eastern monarchies to secure his family’s assets and safety outside of Russia – a move the Kremlin views as a hedge against its own authority.
The Successor Shortlist
The race to replace Kadyrov involves a delicate balance between local clan loyalty and Kremlin oversight. Three primary factions have emerged:
Apti Alaudinov (The Kremlin’s Favorite): As the commander of the “Akhmat” special forces, Alaudinov has gained significant prestige during the Ukraine conflict. Unlike other Chechen leaders, he is seen as a “bridge” between the regional elite and the Russian Ministry of Defense. His frequent appearances on federal television suggest he is being groomed for a wider political role.
The Dynastic Path (Akhmat Kadyrov): Ramzan Kadyrov has spent the last 18 months rapidly promoting his sons. His eldest, Akhmat Kadyrov, has been appointed to various ministerial roles despite his youth (20). This path aims to preserve the Kadyrov family’s absolute grip on the region, though many doubt the younger Kadyrov’s ability to command the same fear and respect as his father.
Magomed Daudov (The Inner Circle): As the Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, Daudov (known as “Lord”) manages the internal security apparatus. He represents the continuity of the current system but lacks the federal-level military charisma of Alaudinov.
