The UN resolution that would change everything
If the UN were to adopt this resolution tomorrow, it would be extraordinary:
[Draft]
Resolution of the General Assembly
Reform of the United Nations
The General Assembly,
Recalling the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
Taking note of the report of the High Level Panel on United Nations Reform,
Acknowledging that governments that commit gross and systematic abuses of human rights should never have been elected to high positions on human rights,
Committed to the enactment of measures consistent with these principles,
- Removes the Islamic Republic of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women, and from the executive board of UNESCO;
- Removes Saudi Arabia from UN Women, the agency for gender equality and empowerment of women, and from the UN Human Rights Council;
- Removes Sudan from the UNESCO executive board, and from the UNESCO human rights committee;
- Removes Venezuela from the UN Human Rights Council, and from the executive board of the UN Development Program;
- Removes the Syrian Arab Republic from its post as Rapporteur of the UN Decolonization Committee, which is charged with ending the subjugation of people;
- Removes China from the UN Human Rights Council;
- Removes Cuba from the UN Human Rights Council, and from the UN Committee on NGOs;
- Removes Mr. Jean Ziegler, co-founder of the Muammar Gaddafi Human Rights Prize, from the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee, and requests the High Commissioner for Human Rights to instruct Mr. Eric Tistounet, Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch, to cancel his planned participation at a public celebration of Mr. Ziegler’s work in Geneva on 14 March 2017;
- Regrets that the above were ever elected, in violation of UN principles;
- Recognizing that today is the Jewish holiday of Purim, a day on which it is customary to share parodies of hallowed texts, such as all of the above text which is hereby repealed, and we heartily extend best wishes to all.
