Time for a Divorce: Should the Democratic Party Be Broken Up?

The results of Tuesday’s NYC primary results are terribly upsetting. What to do about it?

James Carville is 100% right when he says that there should be a schism in the Democratic Party and it should separate from the Democratic Socialists.

The Democratic Socialists’ values and policies are radically different than the traditional Democratic party, one which historically has been home to the majority of American Jews for generations. Jews have felt comfortable in a party which welcomed them, which unequivocally stood with Israel while advocating for progressive values seen to be consistent with Jewish teachings. If the current trend continues, that will no longer be the case.

The Democratic Socialists platform is not only unequivocally anti-Israel and blatantly antisemitic, it is also anti-American. Its policies undermine the foundation upon which our country was founded. It is not the party of Roosevelt, JFK, LBJ, Bill Clinton, etc. and the usurpers are not entitled to wear the mantle of what they stood for.

If there is not a separation, there is a risk that the party will be hijacked and its apparatus and funds will all become available to people whose policies are anathema to all the Democratic party has historically stood for. There is a risk of further alienating and losing support of Jews, who have been the bedrock of financial support for the Democratic party for decades.

It is the only response to Tuesday’s primary that makes sense.
