Tommy Robinson and the conscience of Anglo-Jewry
“The uproar over an invitation to Israel, says less about Tommy Robinson than about the moral timidity of his critics.”
While the pulse of British Jewry usually runs at a steady beat and requires frequent checks for signs of life, over the past week we have witnessed actual palpitations. After the initial shock of the Manchester Yom Kippur massacre and the perfunctory messages of hedged support were issued, the internecine battle began.
The real signs of life in the disparate tapestry that is the Anglo-Jewish community was initiated by the great “Tommy Robinson Debate.” It is very rare to witness an animated communal discourse in England. That is why the Tommy Robinson fiasco is sociologically so fascinating. What nerve has been exposed in this seemingly innocuous news story that has so incensed and polarized the otherwise seemingly lackadaisical tempo of the Jews of Great Britain?
Some background for those not familiar with the comings and goings of the British Isles. Tommy Robinson is a colorful character who has made a name for himself over the past couple of decades. With a mix of man-of-the-people charm and an uncanny political instinct, Tommy has energized the huddled masses. Initially associated with far-right groups, he has since gravitated to the center as a professional political agitator extraordinaire.
He can be described as rough around the edges with an extensive history of arrest and incarceration for a litany of crimes. He is uniquely English to say the least; it would be impossible to find a comparable character outside a country like England. What he lacks in Eton eloquence, he compensates with in clarity and charisma that resonates.
He recently held a rally in London to which he claims 3 million people attended. Elon Musk, who is a big fan, addressed the rally via video link. President Trump has also been advocating for him and his unfair legal treatment as far back as 2018.

The traditional political class is terrified of his influence and following. His messaging has been consistent transparent, and clear: he is a free speech absolutist, he is in favor of controlled immigration, and he is patriotic to a fault. He has also surprisingly been an unreserved and highly vocal advocate for both the Jewish community and Israel.
During the recent dark times, he has stood by the Jewish community in a way that frankly baffles. In spite of the pushback and criticism, and at great personal cost, he has been outspoken and unwavering about this issue. Bearing in mind that in Europe and in England in particular, this is not a popular position, he is not playing to a constituency.
Which brings us to the present kerfuffle. The Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, extended a public invitation for Tommy to visit Israel as a guest of the state. His visit will include meetings in the Knesset and a full government-organized itinerary. Tommy graciously accepted the invitation with the caveat that he might be in jail (you cannot make this stuff up).
I couldn’t have asked for a better holiday blessing than a condemnation from the Palestinian @Keir_Starmer.
Thank you, Keir – we’re proud to host @TRobinsonNewEra and if you don’t like it, that’s a sure sign it truly matters.

Without deep diving, all his recent brushes with the law have the whiff of weaponized lawfare, and they have only further galvanized his base, which is growing exponentially every day.
This ignited a hitherto unseen social media pyrotechnic display in a community that is famous for fully embracing the Keep Calm and Carry On attitude. First into the fray was the august-sounding Board of Deputies of British Jews. They came out strong and vociferous in their protestations against the invite.
Founded in 1760, the Board of Deputies of British Jews pretty much reached its peak of utility in the 19th century while working on Jewish emancipation. When the Zionists were working to establish a state, the board chose caution over courage in an effort not to antagonize the British establishment. They seem to play the role of the court Jew of yesteryear, except neither the court nor the Jews know anything about it.
“Tommy Robinson is a thug who represents the very worst of Britain. His presence undermines those genuinely working to tackle Islamist extremism and foster community cohesion. Minister Chikli has proven himself to be a Diaspora Minister in name only. In our darkest hour, he has… https://t.co/BswfB4mXZ6 pic.twitter.com/LZ1rkPFzOe

The Jewish Leadership Council, another loftily named organization of self-appointed “leaders,” immediately echoed the statement of the Board. Then followed a torrent of righteous indignation from the likes of “Jewish Friends of Labor,” and various Jewish “influencers,” parroting the same talking points with veiled threats of revoking support for Israel.
At this point, the actual Jewish community, not the acronyms or influencers, but the Jew on the proverbial street, began to push back. There was a groundswell of overwhelming support from the entire spectrum of British Jewish life, speaking up in defense of Tommy. This had the feeling of an internal clash between the elites and the plebs.
This was confusing to people on the outside because on the face of it, why would anyone criticize a friend of the community at a time when they are few and far between? As an American, we have often found allies in unlikely demographics, and we think nothing of collaborating with individuals and groups with whom we might not share every value. We are open-minded and accept the hand that is offered without overanalyzing the minutiae of their belief system.
On the flip side we also have a long history of court Jews encouraging their constituents to stay quiet and not draw attention. In the last century, we saw the futility of this strategy with the Yevsektsiya in Russia, the Jewish League against Zionism in Iraq, or the “Germans of the Mosaic Faith.”
There is an inbred instinct not to raise your head above the parapet. The idea being that we can somehow appease our enemies through supplication and bent knee. This strategy is a proven abject failure as Jewish history can attest. I cannot say with any certainty that being loud and speaking up for what is just, will make the difference in the long run, but after you’ve tried everything else, maybe it is time to try something new.
In America, Jews long ago learned to take allies where they can find them, be they evangelicals, conservatives, and even unlikely populists. In England, by contrast, communal leadership still clings to respectability politics at the very real cost of alienating the few true friends we have.
Our earlier history teaches us that Jewish survival has never been won by quiet men, but rather by men like Moses, Mordechai, and Judah Maccabee. The question is whether we still have the courage to follow their example.
If we cannot recognize and accept friends in a hostile world, then perhaps the only thing truly endangered in Anglo Jewry is not just their safety but their sanity.
