Trump’s the art of the lie

Here is a new 5-minute clip of Trump at a recent book interview. It shows many of his dishonesty tactics. Yet, the senior CNN anchor presenting it didn’t understand the first thing about it. He calls it a drunk rambling. He assumes that Trump was believing what he was saying. Of course not! A con artist and thief doesn’t need to believe his own claims and lies.

Honest people must study this tape to understand what we’re up against here. To ditch this as mere ramblings denies the reality that these tactics create millions of naive followers, loyal to him, and believing in him.

First of all, he throws up a lot of short statements to obscure the question.

Some of the statements are the direct opposite of the truth. Not a little variation on the truth, but blatant lies. As when a Nazi would claim that actually, the Jews threatened Germans with extermination during WW II.

Then he throws in claims that his alternative facts are all very well documented. But of course, he doesn’t bring any proof. Just claims.

This is spoken very fast, with passion, with a hint of righteous indignation. That’s not because he was drunk but because he needs to hide his real feelings, that he finds it hilarious that anyone still believes him.

But, when he is surprised by a question, he starts off speaking slowly. He throws in words like ‘perhaps’ to make believe he’s trying to be reasonable, while he’s just playing for time to make it up as he speaks. His tone, though, doesn’t change. It’s one of confidence. How could someone so confident be lying? Well, he had decades of practice.

He spews out a cascade of many broken sentences to overwhelm you. That makes it harder to quote him. He doesn’t paint a Vermeer, in which you can see the most minute details on the canvas. He paints a Monet, lots of large dots that must give an impression without anything too concrete.

Then — he’s not a lazy liar — he throws in exaggerations (the largest crowd ever I spoke to). This must boost his stature. Again, this is not some self-delusion. This is advertising himself. And it works.

When he would need to defend himself in court, before a judge, he’d go down like a meteorite. But, he’s not standing trial (yet). He’s in the court of public opinion. And there, he scones big wins all the time.

As I wrote recently, rather than to point out lies, opponents need to point out who will profit from these lies and who’s going to get hurt by them.

However, if you think those are his absolute top priorities, you might end up disappointed. His first loyalty is to the truth. He will try to stay within the limits of democratic and Jewish law, but he won't lie to support opinions or people when don't deserve that. Yet, his originalities seem to root deeply in traditional Judaism, though they may grow in unexpected directions. In fact, he claims he's modernizing nothing. Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation. (He pleads for a close reading of the Torah instead of going by rough assumptions of what it would probably mean and before fleeing to Commentaries.) This, in all aspects of life, but prominently in the areas of Free Will, Activism, Homosexuality for men, and Redemption. * He hopes that his words will inspire and inform, and disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed.
