Tyranny of the fools

It’s simple math that underpins our democracy. Citizens cast their ballots; the candidate with the largest tally -the majority- wins. And American Jews should worry.

The phrase “tyranny of the majority” is attributed to 19th-century philosophers Alexis de Tocqueville and John Stuart Mill. While they applauded the American experiment, they early on recognized the danger of an unreasoning, unjust majority of voters imposing their will on a minority.

The concept of “tyranny of the majority” suggests that lurking within this red-white-blue majority rules tradition is the potential that someday voters could foolishly choose candidates antithetical to our 250-year-old capitalistic, democracy. Changing values, demographics and geopolitics could usher in congressional and executive leaders who could scapegoat a group as part of their takeover.

For a sneak peek at this menace, consider that New York City’s voters in 2025 elected an inexperienced Muslim Democrat Socialist of America (DSA) candidate Zohran Mamdani for their mayor. He was a candidate supported by Israel-detractor Bernie Sanders, far-left Elizabth Warren, the Squad, Trump accuser Leticia James, and NY Govender Kathy Hochul.

He hyped his Robin Hood urban fiscal concept promised to extract revenue from the successful “rich” to fund free transportation and childcare, subsidized groceries and rent-freeze housing. He won because he appealed to the voters with enough energy, charm and an enticing something-for-nothing narrative.

Mamdani was also an outspoken antisemite and anti-Zionist. His father, a Columbia University professor who Zohran credits for having the greatest influence in him, has a long history of criticizing the US and Israel. Now Mayor Mamdani makes no secret accusing AIPAC as being “monsters”, bragging Palestinians are “central to my identity”, adding that BDS is consistent with my politics”, repeating the “Israel genocide” charge, and proudly proclaiming of his “Globalize the Intifada” stance.

Yes, the mayoral field was flawed, and yes, a mayoral primary or midterm attracts a limited, but energized number of voters. But Mamdani won, and “elections have consequences.” It was a proof-of-concept that a DSA candidate can win. It demonstrated that hostility to a Jewish community (the second largest in the world) and America’s ally Israel was acceptable to a majority of voters.

Going forward now we see a choice to support or not support Israel has become a defining issue for parties and candidates. And, if anyone doubts the corrosive effects on Jews of blind loyalty to the Democrats, assimilation, apathy and DEI brainwashing at our Islamic funded universities, take note that about one third of the NYC Jewish voters cast their ballots for Mamdani.

For more evidence something disturbing is going on, with Mamdani’s endorsement radical socialists and Israel bashers Brad Lander, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier won their New York Congressional House of Representatives races. The phenomena is now sweeping the country. In Colorado, 29-year-old DSA Melat Kiros defeated 15-term U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette. Because they are from deep blue states, they will soon head to Washington DC to join the Squad of radicals.

Could the Democrat Party be overtaken by a socialist form of government? The 12 million illegal immigrants who crossed open borders under President Biden would ultimately vote for Democrat. Sanctuary cities, lax voting regulations, and efforts to impede ICE are still part of the strategy. It seems that the Democrats are heading for a catastrophic tipping point.

The DSA is gaining control of the Democrat Party that has more registered voters than the Republicans. The Gallup poll recently reported 42% of Democrats are positive to capitalism and 66% are positive towards socialism. The Democrat leadership including Senator Schumer and Representative Jefferies seem to accept the DSA radicals into the fold. They lack to wisdom to call out the DSA’s danger and the principle to clearly criticize the Jew-hatred.

The midterms will tease out the DSA success within the party and will also reveal how they perform against Republican candidates. Before going into 2028 campaigns, the Democrats will have to stipulate both socialist and Israel alliance platform planks.

Democrat operatives must know that support for Israel remains broadly positive. The protection Israel, as the point of the spear, affords both America and Western civilization is appreciated by large swaths of the Christian community. If the DSA wants to move mainstream, they will have to up their antisemitic and anti-Israel game.

Jews ought to recognize that an accelerant to this DSA heat is Jew hatred bundled within the anti-Israel fabrications. The DSA has embedded in their pitch and candidate selection an irrational and disproportionate hate for Israel. While most socialist movements are economic based, today’s version is stoked by an intersectional theory of “oppressor and oppressed” peoples that lead them directly and maliciously to target little Israel.

While “all politics are local” was once accepted as truth, now we see a global cause as the source for a hotter flame. It’s the au courant application antisemitism. It’s painfully familiar. It must not ever become the belief of the majority of Americans.

We can assume that there is no one silver bullet to counter the shift in attitudes towards socialism and antisemitism. These trends are long in their making. Only 2% of Americans are Jews, but for the Christian community support for democratic Israel remains a majority position. The duration and outcome to the Iran War could impact attitudes.

The solution to defeating DSA must include a more unified, aggressive approach by the multiple Jewish and pro-Israel organizations. In the past, they were drawn into distracting support for woke causes including climate, and BLM. They now need to speak with one voice about the importance of the American-Israel relationship and support organizations like AIPAC. The lies about Gaza should be refuted vociferously. Support of all politicians who have backed Israel and the Jewish community, regardless of whether Democrat or Republican, should receive generous appreciation.

President George Washington, in his 1790 letter to the Newport, Rhode Island Jews, pledged, “…and there shall be none to make them afraid.” He foresaw that there might be someday some persons or situation who could threaten them. That time is now.
