The United States of America may indeed be the “land of the free,” but it fallen down very deep as the “home of the brave.”
If Israel has its scandals, America’s cannot compare. The confirmation hearings in the Senate Judiciary for appointment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the bench of the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court, with all its majesty, turned into a circus of the worst kind.
Republicans and Democrats were at one another’s throats. Name-calling did not cease. The main eyewitness against him was a 51 year old professor of psychology, Dr. Ford, who gave sworn testimony that when she was about 15 years old she attended a party in the all-boys Catholic Georgetown Prep and while there she asserted that Brett Kavanaugh, very drunk from too many beers, threw her on a bed and sexually molested her.
Two other women, who did not appear before the Committee, accused Brett Kavanaugh of similar offenses, one in particular very vile. Their accusations were recorded, but not deemed credible.
After an unbelievable circus-like atmosphere for a too lengthy time, by a vote of 51 to 49 senators, Judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed and elevated to the illustrious lifetime position as Justice Brett Kavanaugh in the Supreme Court of the United States.
Listening to his self-defense before the Judiciary Committee of the Senate was historical abuse. He shouted at the senators in bitter anger and challenged them to find proof of the allegations made against him..
His boyhood school roommates verified that he was often drunk, but none had ever seen him assault any girls.
In his remarks, he stated that he liked beer and drank beer very often and on occasion too much, but he did not recall a time when he blacked out and could not remember some things.
However, in spite of fierce Democratic voices raised against his confirmation, he was officially confirmed and sworn in to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. While he was SWORN IN, thousands of protestors stood in front of the Supreme Court to SWEAR AT him!
There has been no previous history in America of such anger and hostility in the Senate.
Rumors have been flying that the FBI, which was called upon by President Donald John Trump to investigate the accusations and Kavanaugh’s background, found “nothing” to make him guilty. To no surprise, the witnesses against him were not examined by the FBI. Some say that orders were given by the president to assure a successful confirmation.
Anxious women are waiting to see if the problematic Roe vs. Wade law dealing with the right to have an abortion will be soon “gone with the wind”. Kavanaugh is Conservative, Catholic and opposed to abortion.
Gun control in America is a major issue. The 2nd Amendment of the American Constitution of 1776 gives all Americans the right to bear and to carry arms. Horribly, too many lunatics are using the amendment to shoot and kill wantonly in American schools, playgrounds, and even houses of worship. The gun lobby is perhaps the most powerful lobby in the USA and has had the support of every president Meanwhile, young children are being murdered almost every day in city after city.
We in Israel should be rather fortunate. Our biggest court proceeding is the trial of our Prime Minister’s wife, Sara Netanyahu, accused and indicted on fraud. Her case is in relationship, among other accusations, to purchasing 394 shekels of State funds for prepared foods from luxury restaurants under the pretense that the Prime Minister’s residence was minus a chef.
All of which has been proven to be untrue.
We have had presidents, prime ministers and other government officials who were sentenced to prison terms for various crimes…rape, embezzlement, fraud, and sexual offenses. Shame on all of them !
No female of any member of government has been ever sentenced to prison. Sara Netanyahu’s offense is punishable under our laws to 5 years in prison. Does any Israeli really think that Sara will go to jail?
She had an opportunity to make a deal by admitting her guilt and refunding to the State a portion of the money she used for personal affairs. But she refused the deal and as a result, her trial may produce a guilty verdict and we will have our first Prime Minister’s wife locked up in a cell.
As unstable as the USA may now be, we are thankfully still far from unstability.
The one thing needed to be amended is the offensive Nation- State law which discriminates against our non-Jewish citizens. Though its creator, Prime Minister Netanyahu, disagrees and points to equality for all citizens as written in our 1948 Declaration of Independence, nevertheless our beloved and devoted Druze and Circassian loyal citizens are deeply offended. We do not need nor want to offend them.
Therefore, the Netanyahu stubbornness must be amended. “V’im lo achshav aimatai?”…And if not now, when?
Now for the saddest news from the United States. The beloved Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has announced her resignation after two years. She has been one of America’s finest ambassadors and spokespersons. If she were a male, she might be compared to the silver-tongued Abba Eban, Israel’s greatest and most renowned ambassador.
No reason was given for her decision to resign. It was in no way for political reasons and President Trump admired her for her outstanding service in a very difficult position. Nikki Haley is loved in Israel, a country which she defended constantly against anti-Israel remarks and actions from other delegates in the UN.
I propose that she convert to Judaism, make Aliyah, become an Israeli citizen and ultimately an Israeli Prime Minister.
The ghost of Golda Meier would certainly approve.
