What Sedition?

There has been much media coverage about an attempted seditious act last January 6. when hundreds entered the Capitol Building. Despite hundreds of people charged, not one has been charged with anything close to sedition, since there is no evidence to support the claims.

President Trump did not tell anyone to storm anything. He made it clear that people should be peaceful in their demonstration.

On February 10, 2021, NPR ran an article by Brian Naylor, called Read Trump’s Jan. 6 Speech, A Key Part of Impeachment Trial:

“I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

Telling people to peacefully make their voices heard is a far cry from calling for seditious activities.

In 2018, US Representative, Maxine Waters, went considerably further than anything Trump said to his supporters.

On June 25, 2018, CNN ran an article by Jamie Ehrlich, Maxine Waters encourages supporters to harass Trump administration officials:

“Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up. And if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”

She clearly used violent rhetoric to her supporters without ever mentioning peace of any kind.

That same year, US Representative Ted Lieu threatened civil unrest if Trump fired Mueller. Mueller served at the pleasure of President Trump and could legally fire him.

On March 19, 2018, The Hill ran an article by Julia Manchester, Lieu: There will be ‘widespread civil unrest’ if Trump fires Mueller:

“If the president does go ahead and fire Robert Mueller, we would have people take to the streets. I believe there would be widespread civil unrest because Americans believe the rule of law is paramount,” Lieu told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.”

There was nothing about peace from his open threat to President Trump. It had nothing to do with the rule of law, since there was nothing illegal about firing Mueller. The only one speaking of lawlessness was Representative Lieu.

US Representative, Cory Booker, was another who openly spoke of violence in 2018.

On July 26, 2018, The Daily Wire ran an article by Ryan Saavedra, WATCH: Cory Booker Urges Activists To ‘Get Up In The Face’ Of Members Of Congress:

“Please don’t just come here today and then go home,” Booker told attendees of the National Conference on Enduring Homelessness. “Go to the Hill today. Get up and, please, get up in the face of some congresspeople.”

Trump never told any of his supporters to get in anyone’s face.

The following year, US Representative, Joaquin Castro, used violent rhetoric for fighting in the streets.

On January 11, 2019, Citizen First News ran an article, 10 Times Democrats INCITED Violence Against Trump And His Supporters

“In 2019, Rep. Joaquin Castro said Democrats would “fight [Trump] and challenge him in every way that we can in the Congress, in the courts, and in the streets and protests,” if the president declared a national emergency about a government shutdown.”

There was nothing peaceful about his words to his supporters.

These are just a few examples of violent rhetoric that was largely ignored by the same media claiming Trump called for seditious action. Again, he told his supporters to peacefully make their voices heard. Political rhetoric, even violent rhetoric, is protected under the 1st Amendment, since none told their supporters to use direct violence, the above speech by Democrats are all protected.

One of most antisemitic members of the US House, if not the most, is Representative Rashida Tlaib. As vile as her comments have been in the past, unapologetically filled with hatred towards Jewish people, most have been protected under the 1st Amendment.

When she retweeted, “From the river to the sea,” it crossed a serious line. Openly calling for genocide is not protected speech. There has been blaring silence about her beliefs that every Jew in Israel should be killed and another 6,000,000 Jews added to the dead.

On December 2, 2020, Times of Israel ran an article by Ron Kampeas, Democrat Tlaib shares tweet alluding to Israel’s elimination:

“Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Democrat-Michigan, removed from her Twitter feed a retweet that said “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” a phrase that has been associated with calls to wipe out Israel.

Something else that is not covered under the 1st Amendment is to openly call for a revolution if the Supreme Court does not vote a certain way. US Senator Jeanne Shaheen said exactly that.

On November 30, 2021, National Review ran an article by Caroline Downey, Democratic Senator Predicts ‘Revolution’ If Roe v. Wade Reversed:

“I hope the Supreme Court is listening to the people of the United States because – to go back to Adam Sexton’s question – I think if you want to see a revolution go ahead, outlaw Roe v. Wade and see what the response is of the public, particularly young people,” Shaheen remarked. “Because I think that will not be acceptable to young women or young men.”

Threatening open rebellion crosses a serious line. If anyone wants to know what real seditious speech is, that is it. She is openly threatening members of the Supreme Court with a violent rebellion against the United States if they rule in any way she opposes.

For those news sites that called Trumps words seditious, they have been silent on real sedition.
