As a former Olympic competitor and equestrian at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, the Olympic Games hold a special place in my heart. Competing in the individual jumping event was a thrilling experience, not only because I am passionate about horseback riding, but because of the opportunity to represent something greater than myself. My wife, Ashley Holzer, has also had an incredible Olympic journey, winning a bronze medal in team dressage for Canada, competing in four Olympic Games and later serving as a coach for the Canadian team. The Olympics bring together athletes from around the world, celebrating not only athletic excellence but also unity and shared values.

For me, one of the most inspiring aspects of the Olympics is how they transcend borders and politics. It’s so wonderful to see countries come together in the spirit of competition, putting aside differences to celebrate the joy of sport. As an American Jew, I feel immense pride when watching Israel’s athletes compete on the world stage. Witnessing Israel achieve its best-ever Olympic showing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with seven medals—including one gold, five silver, and one bronze—was a remarkable moment for the country and the Jewish people.

Israel’s achievements in Paris were made even more special considering the challenges they faced. Competing in the shadow of political tensions and amid concerns over anti-Israel sentiment, the athletes performed with grace and determination. Gymnast Artem Dolgopyat added another silver medal to his collection, while sailors Tom Reuveny and Sharon Kantor brought home gold and silver in windsurfing. Israel’s judo team also excelled, with Inbar Lanir and Peter Paltchik contributing to the medal count.

As a former equestrian Olympian, I was especially moved by the Israeli equestrian team’s efforts, led by Ashlee Bond, who finished ninth in the team jumping final. Competing on the Olympic stage is an incredible honor, and seeing Israel’s presence in multiple disciplines is a testament to the country’s growing strength in international sports.

Beyond the medals, the Olympics embody a deeper message of unity. Bill Ackman recently captured this sentiment perfectly, stating, “Israel has enough enemies abroad before being distracted by internecine battles within.” His words are a poignant reminder of the importance of unity, particularly in times of crisis. Just as the Olympic Games bring athletes together to celebrate excellence and camaraderie, so too must we come together as a people in support of one another.

In the end, the Olympics are not just about winning medals but about showcasing the strength and resilience of individuals and nations. The Paris Games served as a shining example of how sport can bridge divides, foster unity, and remind us of the values we share. It’s moments like these that show us we have more in common than we realize—whether in the arena or in life—and that the joy of sport is something that unites us all.
