Yair’s ‘Apple’ and Trump’s Plan

Two things have come to my attention today. Two disturbing things. In the first instance we have the case of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s controversial and debauched son Yair, not known for his political skills as much as he is remembered for his drunkenness and dancing at strip clubs in Tel Aviv. He lives “high on the hog” at the official residence of the prime minister and enjoys all tax-free benefits.

In a remark he recently made referring to Gidon Sa’ar, a once-hopeful candidate to overthrow Yair’s father in elections, he said that “Sa’ar’s wife is a leftist and therefore he too must be a leftist.”

Yair the Likudnik has proven the adage that the apple falls not far from the tree. “Ha tapuach lo nofail rachok min ha-etz”.

To follow his twisted thinking, we might say “Bibi Netanyahu is a corrupt crook, therefore his wife Sara must also be a corrupt crook.”  Guilt by association or sheer idiocy?

Young Yair may have dreams of entering the political circus presently headed by his father but I cannot think of anything so drastic and foolish to be added to our already drastic and foolish political situation.

The second very disturbing item is a leaked report regarding US President Donald Trump’s proposed Peace Plan for Israel and the Palestinians.

According to unknown sources the plan proposes giving 80 percent of the West Bank to the Palestinians with East Jerusalem as its capitol. The Old City and the holy sites would remain under Israeli sovereignty while allowing for sharing with the Palestinians and Jordan.

Israel could keep 20% of the West Bank including the settlements which would be annexed to Israel.

I personally cannot imagine the Israelis or the Palestinians accepting Trump’s proposed plan. In its essence, it cannot lead to peace.

While there is no mention of returning refugees, it is patently clear that Israel will not surrender East Jerusalem to a proposed Palestinian state.

The American planners, Greenblatt and Kushner, have denied the authenticity of the leaked plan, but following the idea that “where there is smoke there is fire,” the leaked information appears to be accurate.

For thousands of years, as an example, millions (perhaps billions) of people have died from the dreaded disease of cancer. Still today with all of our medical knowledge and intelligence, there is no known cure for cancer. Specialists and medical scholars have tried through the centuries but regrettably their well-intentioned efforts have not brought favorable results.

Likewise, the Arab-Jewish conflict which is more than 100 years old, has not been solved despite good intentions of peace-makers from across the globe. And in my opinion, it will never be solved.

It is the history of two people who claim the same land and territory, unable and unwilling to share.

When partition of Palestine was decided at the United Nations in 1947, the Arab states rejected it out of hand while the Jews accepted it stating that “half of the land is better than none”. It was the negative attitude of the Arab states and the Palestinian leadership which rejected the partition plan which has caused the political situation to remain frozen.

Terrorist activities on the part of Arabs have taken a toll in death and destruction but has not, and never will, weaken the state and the people of Israel.

So between Yair’s folly and the leaked peace plan, there is little reason to feel happy.

But what else is new?  This is, after all, the Middle East (or more correctly, the “Muddled” East”).
