Zionist’s Guide to the World Cup—Day 6
Day 5 proved to be an unsatisfying day for the Zionist’s Guide to the World Cup (ZGWC). The Swiss downed the preferred Cameroonian squad. Uruguay and South Korea battled to a nil-nil draw. Portugal bested the Black Stars of Ghana in a thriller, 3-2. Brazil then dispatched pareve Serbia, 2-0.
Day 6 features the second round of games for Groups A and B and kicks off with Wales and Iran. Normally, this would be an easy selection for the ZGWC in favoring Wales. But these are not normal times. If the Iranian players again display the courage of their anti-regime convictions, then Team Melli should be favored—unless the mullahs would seek to use a victory to bolster their own legitimacy. This is a difficult predicament for Team Melli and their fans and, least of all, the ZGWC.
The rest of the day’s offerings are significantly less problematic. Senegal is easily favored over the Qatari squad, a surrogate for their much-reviled government. Netherlands and Ecuador are both endorsed, but the Dutch perhaps have a slight edge. The day ends with the USA and England. The Yanks are favored by the ZGWC, and, hopefully, the support from this quarter boosts the lads’ fortunes against the Three Lions.
