The Israeli Right won big time—for now
Anti-Zionist will again equate Israel’s government with Nazis but they already showed their true sentiments when they called the previous one Nazi too, while it was a center-left coalition with an Arab party in it.
Terrorists will again justify their murders and war crimes by calling Israel racist and colonialist, but that became unbelievable when their homicidal uptick was under a center-left coalition with an Arab party part in it.
This time, the democratic idea won that ballot boxes appoint our PM, not judges’ gavel blows. Then increasing ridiculousness of all the trials meant to unseat and disable Netanyahu must have helped his comeback.
Weak democracy won because it allowed bigots to speak and be elected. It’s high time for Radical Democracy, as I wrote before. But don’t make any mistakes. Weak democracy is still the best system humanity ever had.
Of course, it is still possible that exactly this coalition will bring down violent crime against women, Trans people, and Arab citizens (by Arab gangs). It is possible but sadly unlikely. But, despite being a capitalist, Netanyahu protected the people against corona, so you never know.
The Right is jubilant. It will try to curtail the High Court of Justice, a left-wing bastion for decades. It will drive up the prices, lower the quality by introducing more competition, lower the taxes except for VAT, enforce Shabbat transportation only for car owners, and block Gay marriage.
Power struggles and infighting are not over. They’re just beginning. While the left is busy blaming each other, the right-wing parties will rattle sables and throw punches to get as many of their election promises realized. When a coalition is finally formed, it won’t be over. Bibi can always gamble again and go to the polls for more seats, as he’s done thrice in 18 months.
This election result, though, is not as malignant as US’ Trump’s winning. He revigorated racists, White supremacists, and other anti-democrats. The new Israeli government will do no such thing. It will just run until the electorate becomes fed up again—soon. That’s weak but still a democracy.
Yet, heydays for standup comedy and activism are returning. Dust off your writing pads and marching shoes. Extra-parliamentarian democracy is up.
And, the High Court of Justice will work overtime striking down laws including a law that the Knesset can put a law on the books it struck down.
