In every generation they try to destroy us
Last night, we experienced a taste of the miracle of the Exodus.
We received shelter in place orders – וְאַתֶּ֗ם לֹ֥א תֵצְא֛וּ אִ֥ישׁ מִפֶּֽתַח־בֵּית֖וֹ עַד־בֹּֽקֶר – “None of you shall go outside the door of your house until morning… And God will pass over the door and not let the Destroyer enter and smite your home” (Ex 12:22)
“And when you enter the land that God will give you, as promised, you will have to do this work – וְהָיָ֞ה כִּֽי־תָבֹ֣אוּ אֶל־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִתֵּ֧ן יְְ לָכֶ֖ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֵּ֑ר וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת”
Greatly frightened, the Israelis cried out to God –
God will battle for you; you hold your peace – יי יִלָּחֵ֣ם לָכֶ֑ם וְאַתֶּ֖ם תַּחֲרִשֽׁוּן (Ex 14:14) …Tell the Israelis to advance
The messenger of God, who had been going ahead of the Israelite army, now moved to behind them; and the pillar of cloud shifted from in front of them and took up a place behind them -וַיִּסַּ֞ע מַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים הַהֹלֵךְ֙ לִפְנֵי֙ מַחֲנֵ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּסַּ֞ע עַמּ֤וּד הֶֽעָנָן֙ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיַּֽעֲמֹ֖ד מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ (Ex 14:15) And it came between the enemy army and the army of Israel.
Thus there was the cloud and darkness, and it lit up the night, so that the one could not come near the other all through the night.
Then they held out their ‘arms’ over the [Red] sea and God drove back the sea [of missiles] with a strong wind from Gaza all that night, and turned the sea [of missiles] into swords [of iron]…
…When the Jewish people were gathered from places of foreign languages. Judea became His sanctuary, Israel His government. The sea [of missiles] saw it, and fled; the [country of] Jordan turned backward [and defended it]!
And finally, in the early morning we received the texts that guided us: “when tomorrow your child asks you, saying, ‘What does this mean?’ you shall reply, ‘It was with a mighty hand that God brought us out from [Exile], from a position of servitude”… to self-determination and freedom.
