The failing Palestinian Post (formerly the Jerusalem Post) has no idea what happens except for a handful of its exceptional writers. On the issues of Palestinian Muslims that continues to show best. They just transmit what people say to them without any critical question or qualification. They’re anyone’s mouthpiece — but that is not journalism.
In the newest installment, they interview one of the businessmen whom the PA tried to arrest. He escaped and claims that they want to kill him. He plays innocent saying that, though he was warned to skip Kushner’s seminar, there’s no PA law against joining an economic conference, so he went. For sure, there isn’t but that’s not the reason for the PA’s fury.
Still, the interviewee gives away the real reason towards the end of the interview. He remarks that all economic projects in his city of Hebron are done by parties from outside of the PA. “What has the Palestinian Authority done for the residents of Hebron? All the projects you see in Hebron are funded by the international community. Where does the money [the PA receives] go? Where are the billions of dollars that the Palestinian Authority received in order to help the Palestinians?”
And that is the reason the PA is after him. He’s critical of them, their corruption and their lack of interest to help the people. No dictator tolerates opposition. He’s not from the competition, Hamas — he’s worse: an unruly person because he wants freedom of speech, accountability for the rulers, prosperity for society. He’s right but should not be surprised that the PA doesn’t applaud that, just because there’s no law against what he wants. For the PA, he’s subversive.
His pronouncement that he’s “not a traitor” is ridiculous. He is — of the PA that’s betraying the Palestinian People. That he finds it then needed to ‘reassure’: “and I’m not a collaborator with Israel,” betrays (pun not intended) how much he is not ready or fit for any peace process.
He’d better return to pretending he’s intimidated by the PA until the population as a whole is ready to chase the usurers from their palaces.
There is no solution then too, though, because the next party to take over will be Hamas and they’re even worse. They terrorize the population religiously and (generously) withhold some of the money from their private bank accounts to invest in weapons to fight Israel.
And that is the truth that the Post obscures. Willfully, if it had a clue.
