Where Were You When? The Landmarks of Our Marriage
How did two separate lives become an “US”?
That question brings us to the finale of our three-part From “ME” to “US” Marriage Renewal Series.
Blog 1, “Ten Days, Ten Traits: Take the Marriage Challenge,” challenged us to recognize the traits that can get in the way of our best “US.”
Blog 2, “What Does OUR Marriage Need More Of? Positivity,” turned the focus to the positive qualities we want more of in our marriage.
Blog 3 brings the journey together:
What has our journey taught us about our “US”—and what will we do with those lessons now?
None of us arrived at the chuppah as a blank slate. We brought our families of origin, experiences, values, expectations and our own ideas about marriage.
But from the moment we married, something new began.
We started fashioning an “US.”
Two histories became a shared history, and year by year we built a foundation uniquely ours.
Children. Careers. Celebrations. Losses. Financial pressures. Family changes. Ordinary days and unexpected challenges.
Our marriage developed its own highlights and challenges. We learned what brought us closer, what pushed us apart, what made us laugh, what tested us—and what brought out the best in each other.
That history is our roadmap.
Looking backward is not about nostalgia. It is about recognizing what strengthened our “US,” what weakened it, and what those lessons can teach us about the marriage we want going forward.
That is where our three blogs meet:
Take what needs work. Add what we want more of. And use what our marriage has taught us to strengthen the “US” we have built.
Now comes the most important question:
What are we willing to do about it?
Because wanting a stronger marriage is not the same as building one.
Marriage needs investment.
Plan on a regular basis and Protect the Date Night—because our “US” deserves time.
Make the Check-In a habit—because communication deserves attention before problems demand it.
Express appreciation. Listen. Laugh. Apologize. Put down the phone. Make time for affection and friendship.
Small actions, repeated consistently, create the atmosphere of a marriage.
And shalom bayit is built through those choices—day after day.
So where do we want our “US” to go from here?
This New Year, why not create a simple Marriage Mission Statement?
Complete one sentence together:
“In the coming year, we want our ‘US’ to be…”
Then decide what each of you will do to help make it happen.
Because without investment, marriage can drift.
With commitment and dedication, love can deepen, friendship can grow, and each spouse can bring out more of the best in the other.
And what we build reaches beyond us.
We began our marriages carrying lessons from our families of origin.
Someday, our children may carry lessons from ours.
What do we want them to have learned by watching us?
That is our legacy.
Don’t leave your marriage to chance.
Invest in it. Protect it. Nurture it. Bring out the best in each other.
And keep choosing the “US.”
A rock-solid marriage is not one that is never tested.
It is one whose foundation is strengthened every time two people choose to turn toward each other rather than away.
And there is one more lesson worth carrying forward: marriage enrichment should not begin only when something is wrong.
A good marriage is worth making better.
So where can we turn when we want help strengthening our “US”?
