Gulaid Yusuf Idaan is a Senior Lecturer, international affairs researcher, and author specializing in international relations, international law, diplomacy, and the geopolitics of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
His scholarship examines statehood and recognition, sovereignty, maritime security, strategic geography, foreign policy, and great-power competition, with particular emphasis on Somaliland and the evolving strategic architecture of the Red Sea–Indian Ocean region.
He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Horn of Africa Peace & Strategic Institute (HAPSI). Through his research and public writing, he offers independent analysis of the political, legal, and strategic forces shaping the Horn of Africa and its place in the international system.
His work is distinguished by an approach that brings international law, diplomacy, and geopolitical strategy into a single analytical framework, examining not only what international law permits, but also how power, interests, geography, and strategic necessity shape international outcomes.
